The Bank of Canada has issued new 20, 50 and 100 dollar bills as an attempt to decrease conterfeiting. New features have been added such as a metallic holographic stripe, a watermarked portrait, a windowed colour-shifting thread, raised print, fine-line priniting, fluorescence and a see-through number.

Statistics:
  • For 2003, roughly $12.7 million of counterfeits were passed comparied to $5 million the previous year.
  • The balk of fake money comes mostly in $10 and $20.
  • Fewer the 10 counterfeit versions of the new $100 bill in the first three circulations.
  • The bank of Canada plans to re-issue a$10 bill next year and is still studying whether it will put out a new $5 bill.
  • The $5 and $10 bills have the lowest life-span, lasting only one to two years on average.
  • There was a huge increase of 72% in counterfeiting crimes in 2003, bringing counterfeiting up to the sixth largest crime category in Canada
